Because of the orientation of the
grain at the end of a board, fasteners such as nails and screws can
easily pull out.
An old cabinetmaking trick is to insert a dowel into the board near
its end. Since the grain of the dowel runs perpendicular to the grain
of the board, it gives the fastener a stronger surface to grab onto.

This tip was used during the construction of our router table. (for
plans click here) We needed to secure two lag bolts into the
end grain of the table. Top Picture - A hole is drilled near the end of the board. Middle Picture - In this picture the dowel is being trimmed with a
flush cut saw after it was glued and inserted into the hole. Bottom Picture - Lag bolts are fastened into the table's base.
