Fastening Into End Grain

Because of the orientation of the grain at the end of a board, fasteners such as nails and screws can easily pull out.

An old cabinetmaking trick is to insert a dowel into the board near its end. Since the grain of the dowel runs perpendicular to the grain of the board, it gives the fastener a stronger surface to grab onto.

About the picture:
This tip was used during the construction of our router table. (for plans click here) We needed to secure two lag bolts into the end grain of the table.
Top Picture - A hole is drilled near the end of the board.
Middle Picture - In this picture the dowel is being trimmed with a flush cut saw after it was glued and inserted into the hole.
Bottom Picture - Lag bolts are fastened into the table's base.
