This combination Arkansas Stone set has coarse and fine stones bonded together. It comes in a cedar storage box.

Natural Arkansas Stones have long been viewed as the finest sharpening stones available. They are mined from novaculite and have a uniquely regular crystalline structure that makes them very consistent for sharpening. The stones are available in a range of harnesses intended for different sharpening steps. As with all stones, Arkansas Stones require lubricant to keep the stone from clogging with metal particles. It also helps to reduce the sharpening effort.

Water or honing oil can be used as a lubricant. However, if you decide to use oil you must continue to use it, as the water will no longer be able to penetrate the stone (we recommend water). The Soft stone is the most commonly used grade of the stone. The harder grades of the stones work best if the edge has been prepared first with the soft stone. The stones come in a wooden cedar storage box.

Arkansas Stones are graded according to the following scale:
Washita
ñ These stones are the softest and most aggressive cutting of the Arkansas stones. They are typically used for fast removal of metal such as when taking out nicks or re-beveling a chisel.
Soft Arkansas Stones
ñ These stones are the best choice for general duty sharpening. They provide a good balance between the speed of sharpening and the ultimate sharpness of the edge.
Hard Arkansas Stones - The hard grade of the Arkansas stones are used for honing a highly polished edge. They cut slower but produce a finer edge.
